This spade, also referred to as a trench shovel or flat shovel, is used to dig up the soil and is also ideal for digging garden edging or ditches. A spade has a narrower blade than a shovel or scoop shovel, and is rectangular, allowing it to easily slide into the ground. Place the shovel vertically on the surface and kick the spade into the ground with your foot. How far you push the spade into the ground depends on how deep you want to dig. Then pull the shovel back by the handle to take out the soil.
