Using a splitting maul

• Start with a solid chopping block. Use a block of wood that is considerably wider than the pieces of wood you are going to split. Using a chopping block prevents the axe from hitting your legs. Added to that, without using a chopping block, the splitting maul will hit the ground often. This blunts the cutting edge.
• Make sure you are standing at the right distance from the chopping block. Take the splitting maul with one hand and place the head on the far end of the chopping block. You measure the distance to the far end of the chopping block, because you tend to hit the block further back than you think you will. 
• Watch your technique. Grab the of the handle with one hand, and place the other hand above it. Lift the splitting maul up above your head (with the cutting edge to the front). Then, bring down the axe while bending your knees. This lowers the chance of the splitting maul swinging too far and hitting your legs.
