Preferably, use a stainless steel carriage bolt, because the hinge is also made of stainless steel. The length of the carriage bolt you use will depend on the thickness of your door or gate. A handy mnemonic for this is to use a carriage bolt that is 15mm longer than the thickness of your door or gate. Example: do you have a door or gate that is 45 mm thick? Then you use a 60 mm long carriage bolt, in this case, our stainless steel carriage bolts M8 x 60 mm. 

Mounting Stainless Steel Strap Hinges of 40 cm

Place the hinge in the desired position of the garden door or gate. Mark the 4 mounting holes per hinge on the door with a carpenter's pencil. Then drill the holes in those places with our 9 mm thick hardwood drill. This makes it possible to pass the carriage bolt through the hinge and the door. Note: Since this is a square hole hinge, insert the carriage bolts from the side of the hinge. As a result, the square part that is under the head of the stainless steel carriage bolt falls exactly in the square hole of the hinge, and the carriage bolt will not turn when tightening. Then place the nut and any washer on the back of the carriage bolt and tighten the nut securely.
